Heart of the Sea - Trailer

"Heart of the Sea" is Ron Howards latest movie coming out March 2015.

I had the pleasure to work on this movie in the beginning of 2014. Beautiful storytelling, amazing visuals.

The movie is an adaption of the book. The book is based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home.

Hope you'll enjoy it.

Ironman 3 - Scanline VFX Breakdowns

I find the best way to describe what I do for a living, is to show breakdowns of the movies.

It's always fascinating to see how a picture is composed, what's real and what is just pure visual effects magic.

Here is a clip of the studio that I am working at right now, a little break apart of our work that got nominated for a vfx academy award on Ironman 3.

Enjoy.

300: Rise of an Empire - Trailers

Lots of hours went into the making of this movie. I worked on the water battle sequences, which includes the horse running thru a burning ship. It was one of the most challenging shots I have ever worked on. Nice to see it paid off. That shot is on all 3 trailers released. Enjoy!

A Good Day to Die Hard

It finally happened. The new trailer is out!

One of the most difficult shot I have ever worked on - no, honestly, I can say "the most difficult" shot I have ever worked on is the final shot of this trailer.

So much work, so many hours caching/rendering/discussing...

I am just happy that my shot made it to the trailer, and I just think it's a glorious shot for Scanline.

FX Guide - Vampire Hunter: two killer sequences

A nice article on FX Guide about our work on Abe.

There are also couple of breakdowns of the fire shots that I worked on at Method Studios under Randy Goux's supervision. Actually the video of the fire breakdown is one my shots. It was a challenging one. It required some dev time to get the flames in slow motion and it's especially tricky to have camera looking down at the flames. There are no much reference footage showing how flames would look like from top down!

Enjoy.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

There are a lot press releases about ALVH since the beginning of 2012.

Here are some examples of things that people are saying:

"Having already seen a cut of the film, Mackie says the flick's action sequences are "unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. He [director Timur Bekmambetov] realized that this fabricated story is so far out there that he had to go all the way out to make it work. So, he just went as far as he could with the CGI and that trademark Timur cranking of shots and the storytelling. Abraham Lincoln is like The Matrix of the next generation. It’s going to do to film what The Matrix did to film.""

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter explores the secret life of our greatest President, and the untold story that shaped our nation. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of Wanted) bring a fresh and visceral voice to the blood-thirsty lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history's greatest hunter of the undead."

the Art of VFX - Suckerpunch

I really like the articles on the art of vfx website. Here is another one about the work done by MPC Vancouver on Suckerpunch.

It's concentrated on the Samurai sequence that I worked on. It gives an idea about the challenges faced dealing with realtime and 96fps retimed shots. It was quite the pain to do snow for both real time and slow motion shots.

And also, it mentions the use of Pixelux's DMM for destruction shots.

You can also see the empty stadium before it was filled with cg crowd.
